Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that is literally defined as “ear aesthetics”. This aesthetic operation is the process of rearranging the shape of the auricle, or the pinna, to give it a more natural and aesthetic appearance. There are many different surgical techniques and methods for otoplasty, and these techniques can be successfully applied by a few surgeons.
Otoplasty generally provides a solution for individuals who are unhappy with the shape of their ears. Pathological conditions such as protruding or large ears, absence or weakness of the antihelix, and hypertrophy of the cavum concha can be corrected using various otoplasty techniques to obtain natural and patient-satisfying results. This aesthetic operation is performed especially on preschool children, usually around the age of 5, at the most appropriate time. Because making fun of protruding ears at school age can negatively affect the child's psychology.
Otoplasty surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and can take 1-2 hours on average. The desired ear shape is determined with an incision made behind the ear and the surgery is performed using suture techniques. During the surgery, cartilage excision is performed if necessary and an attempt is made to obtain a natural aesthetic ear. After the surgery, the incision behind the ear is closed with sutures, and therefore, a generally unobtrusive, inconspicuous scar is formed.
When proper hygiene and sterilization are provided during and after the operation, the risk of infection is minimized. The quality and suitability of the sutures used prevent problems such as ear opening, re-protrusion or deformity. Post-operative dressings, appropriate bleeding control and postoperative follow-up prevent hematoma formation. Post-operative dressings and check-ups usually last 10 days, and the patient can return to daily social life after the sutures are removed on the tenth day. Using an elastic head bandage only at night may be recommended to achieve better results.
Otoplasty is an effective cosmetic surgery procedure that helps patients feel better about themselves and achieve a youthful and natural appearance. A detailed examination and surgical planning prior to surgery is important to meet patients' expectations.
